PB Workshop at LGA White Paper Conference
The Government has now published its White Paper on Community Empowerment, 'Communities in Control'. The Paper offers a framework for revitalising local democracy and enhancing active participation in your community and forms the blueprint for legislation which will fundamentally affect the way your council works with its residents.

Power to the people: exploring the Empowerment White Paper
The LGA is holding a comprehensive one-day event that will get to theheart of the issues in the Empowerment White Paper that matter most to you. Imaginative workshops will demonstrate examples of pioneeringwork in community leadership, new technologies, asset transfer andparticipatory budgeting and will invite your input and ideas. Topicalplenary sessions will bring together experts and opinion formers and giveyou the opportunity to hear first-hand, and question, their visions for the future of local government.
The Conference will enable delegates to:
- gain an insight into the purpose of the White Paper from the Secretary of State;
- consider the challenges and possibilities of empowerment workfrom both an urban and rural perspective;
- understand how the proposals for empowerment will affect theirwork;
- learn from examples of innovative best practice from councils up and down the country, from participatory budgeting to the Duty toInvolve;
- discuss how the empowerment agenda can best be forwarded in their local area with colleagues from across the country;
- put forward their own experiences and opinions to add to this important national debate.
The PB Unit with the London Borough of Redbridge are running a workshop on participatory budgeting in the morning workshop sessions. The workshop will be interactive aims to get delegates to think through the benefits and challenges and possible ways they could implement PB in their local areas.
