Background:
One of the challenges of the new local government act is the duty to involve local people. LSPs will need to demonstrate how the have not just consulted but involved their communities in decision making, and it is likely that the new inspection regime CAA will expect some demonstration of how this is done.
Participatory budgeting is one way of doing this, supported and endorsed by Hazel Bears who has stated her ambition for all local authorities to take this approach by 2012. PB allows local people to participate in spending decisions through public meetings and votes to set local priorities and fund projects and services.
Why is PtP holding this event:
•To introduce PB to LSP stakeholders
•To share experiences from pilots in the south east and nationally
•To test the commitment for further pilots
Objectives/Outcomes of the event:
•Delegates have a basic understanding of PB
•Delegates are aware of practical examples of PB in the south east and nationally
•Delegates are aware of opportunities to take part in funded pilots and how to become involved
