Twitter for empowerment!
Communities and Local Government have set up a twitter channel to let people know what they're doing about empowerment and for people to twitter themselves.
PB commitment in Policing Green Paper
"the Home Office will support the use of participatory budgeting involving community safety resources. The participatory budgeting process ensures that hte views of the local community are built into the decision-making process" (Policing Green Paper, p.20)
PB Unit deliver to a packed out West Midlands seminar
Over 70 delegates attended the PB Unit's West Midland's regional seminar on PB in conjunction with Government Office West Midlands (GOWM) and Regional Action West Midlands (RAWM). The event was very popular with people attending from all over the West Midlands, and some from further afield.
PB key message in empowerment white paper
On Thursday 10th July, Communities & Local Government published 'Communities in Control: real people, real power' or the community empowerment white paper. The PB Unit is really happy to note that PB runs as a key thread throughout the whole paper and is linked to a number of other key commitments as well as there being PB specific key commitments.
Southampton's Your Health Your Community Your Vote success
Southampton PB pilot's first PB voting event on 27th June was a huge success with Thornhill residents turning out to vote on how £50,000 of monies allocated to health should be spent.

North East regional seminar success
The first of the PB Unit's regional seminars, held in the North East, was a great success. Jointly hosted by Government Office North East and the regional empowerment consortia, and supported by Newcastle City Council, over 70 people attended.
Consultation on national PB strategy closed
The consultation by Communities and Local Government on their national participatory budgeting strategy has now closed.
Deadline for feedback extended
We have extended the deadline to receive feedback on the draft values, principles and standards document until 15th July, as we've received a number of requests for an extension. Please do send us your thoughts and views.
Newcastle's children and young people receive award for PB
Newcastle's UDecide participatory budgeting pilot for children and young people has won the award for Innovative Engagement from the Academy of Sustainable Communities Creating the Future awards series, last week.
Date for national Participatory Budgeting conference announced
The date for the national PB conference has been announced as 15th September 2008. The conference will be held in the prestigious Midland Hotel in Manchester with a keynote speach from Rt. Hon. Hazel Blears MP; a staunch champion of participatory budgeting.

Communities & Local Government launches the Community Power Pack
The Department for Communities & Local Government jointly with Involve, launched the Community Power Pack, designed to help local groups organise and facilitate events about empowerment. Government wants to hear your views on empowerment.
Newcastle ups their PB game
After successfully piloting participatory budgeting in three of Newcastle's outer wards since 2006, Newcastle is rolling out PB to five wards in 2008, as well as continuing the city-wide PB events with children and young people with £2.25 million for 2008/09
Salford's PB successes pave the way for more
Following the successful use of PB last year in the Claremont & Weaste Community Committee area, the East Salford Community Committee held 3 PB events on February 28th to agree local priorities for both the remainder of the 2007/08 budget (£85k) & 2008/09 budget
