Residents in Stockport spend £30,000 on community safety
On 14th March, over 160 people voted on how to spend £30,000 in Brinnington, Stockport.
The event was a huge success and a real demonstration of what can be achieved with good community engagement and organisation.
On the day, 22 projects - a mixture of public sector services and community and voluntary groups - were funded - aimed at improved safety in the Brinnington community.
The funds came from a number of partners including the Home Office, the Neighbourhood Renewal Team, the Youth Offending Team and Stockport's Tactical Partnership Business Group.
On the day staff were amazed that over 200 adults and approximately 70 children came to the event. Bidders were allowed to present for up to 3 minutes and asked for sums between £500 - £3000 each. After each presentation, the voters (all those aged 13 and over) of which there were approximately 160, were asked whether they thought that the bid should receive a) ALL of the money requested, b) MOST of the money requested, c) SOME of the money requested, or d) NONE of the money requested. Each vote for ALL was counted as 3points, MOST as 2 points, SOME as 1 point and NONE as 0 points.
The projects that were funded will begin in April and will all be delivered in the Brinnington area.
