Values, Principles & Standards

The values, principles and standards that we developed for PB in the UK are very important for a quality process.

Newcastle Denton 2

There are 8 values.  These are:

  • Transparency
  • Accessibility
  • Deliberation
  • Empowerment
  • Local Ownership
  • Mainstream Involvement
  • Representative democracy
  • Shared responsibility

Each value has principles and standards that relate to the value.  In 2009 we developed guidance on the values, including matrices to chart the inclusion of the values in a PB process and good practice case studies for each value.  You can download the guidance at the bottom of this page.

Whilst each value will be incorporated in different degrees in each PB process, we believe the best will incorporate all, more fully and those that see most progress in terms of outcomes and benefits are likely to be because of the inclusion of the values in a process.

Because of their central importance to any PB process, we have also included them in our self-evaluation guidance to bring together the aims of the values with the practices.
