How is local government organised? Most Participatory Budgeting takes places within the framework of local government so it is important to have an understanding of this structure in England, Scotland and Wales.
Why get involved with PB?It's often been said money is power. Every year thousands of pounds worth of public money is spent in your name and on your behalf. If you are not involved when your money is spent, then how do you know it will be spent the way you want it to be?
Top tips for getting involvedThere are lots of good experiences on which to build. All over the country local councils are already using Participatory Budgeting and more will be doing so in the future. The PB Unit has been studying what makes for successful programmes.
The issue of representationOne of the most common questions the PB Unit is asked at conferences, seminars, and training events is about representation. There are two main issues that are commonly raised: how important is it that different groups are fairly represented and how do you go about ensuring fair representation and how do you manage the potential of particular individuals or groups 'hijacking' an event by getting all their supporters to vote for their project? This page aims to address some of those issues and help organisers think through the risks around representation.
CouncillorsThis page is for councillors/elected members to help you to think about why you might want to do PB, why you might want to promote it as an idea and how it can help you in your role as councillor.
The People's Fund, East End & Hendon, SunderlandThe People's Fund was one of the original 5 pilots that the then Office of the Deputy Prime Minister funded to trial PB. They used a small community chest approach, with two events using PB to allocate £15,000 and £35,000 respectively.
Role of councillors in PBIt is important to note that participatory budgeting does not, in any way, diminish the role of councillors and representative democracy. It supports it. This page explains the role of councillors within the PB process.
Voting methodsVoting is a crucial part of the PB process - whether that's done in a single event, multiple events or remotely. This page looks at different methods of voting and their pros and cons.
